The boys lost at extra time but boy did they play. So proud of them.
‘We are the Kenya 7s’
Dream IT! Believe IT! Achieve IT!
Ever so often I find myself impressed by someone, the list reads as short as Size 8’s presenting talent on Sakata but thats a story for another day, A few days ago I got to sit down and have a chat with one of the most impressive upcoming artists, the man who has everyone thinking again about the quality of music they listen to, but you probably know him as Mr. Westlands Swaga thats right am talking about Kagwe Mungai. I sat down with him to find out if he is just a fluke or a stroke of sheer genius.
Right of the bat one thing was clear to me, people who compared Kagwe Mungai to Madtraxx are absolutely wrong, or as Kagwe put it, “I love the comparison but I’m a completely different artist, with a different sound and brand.” People have likened the two artists due to the fact that both of them have hit songs called Get Down, and just like Madtraxx’s Get Down, Kagwe Mungai’s has a signature line, thats right “Let Me see your westlands swaga!” which isn’t a dance move, it infact has to do with a person always walking, talking and acting with the same confidence they have when they are partying in Westlands. Kagwe Mungai however reminded me of another famous artist, Bruno Mars. If you are a fan of Bruno Mars then you are aware of his Signature hats, jeans and shirt, during a recent shoot with reknown photographer KBoss, Kagwe looked like a younger version of the International Superstar, the comparisons don’t stop there, both Kagwe and Bruno Mars are songwriters, producers and performers. There is also the question of the fact that they both have songs called Marry You. Both of them started their careers at extremely young ages and just like Bruno Mars, Kagwe Mungai struggled with what to call himself as an artist, playing around with the names Kagweezi, beat boy wonder and Just Kagz all of which would have ended his career even before it began.
But Kagwe is by no means a cover act, the upcoming artists and soon to be actor, is as ambitious as the day is young. Explaining his brand as an mix between talent, ambition and a hunger to see the music Industry grow to a whole new level, Kagwe’s hit song Get Down stayed on Kenya’s Number one drive show for all your local and urban hits One Drive on One FM with Adele Onyango’s countdown Top 6 at 6, Kagwe however hasn’t let this song’s success turn him into an ego-maniac or make him less hungry to make music, saying that at the end of the day he doesn’t just want to be a one hit wonder. The outspoken and confident Kagwe Mungai doesn’t shy away from painting me a canvas of where he sees his career going in the next 2-5 years, Kagwe who once brushed shoulder’s with Roc Nation’s very own J.Cole at University of SouthHampton wants to one day perform alongside the award winning rapper, Kagwe also is keen on homing his acting skills and possibly doing music management.
Whether or not Kagwe Mungai will be able to sustain his quality of music and sound is a given, Kagwe Mungai is set to release a track alongside showstopping artist Fena Gitu. Kagwe Mungai is not just the next big act out of Kenya but he is about to take the music Industry by storm. Kagwe Mungai easily gets a 8.1 on the RaaMeter, Kagwe Mungai consider yourself FOCUSED ON.
Very many people (fans included) don’t know that the African Superman like Clark Kent has a secret identity and its Harrison Munio. The man who is a third responsible for one of the most trendsetting music groups in East Africa’s History, Necessary Noize, which boasted Nazizi and Wyre as members and a made generation changing tracks like Rusha which had the very unforgetful line ”Rusha mikono Juu!” always a trendsetter Bamzigi went on to make more hits like “Bounce!” which was the first video in Kenyan history to be shot in an underground parking, a video that I feel inspired the video for International Nominated track for Camp Mulla - PARTY DON STOP.
However just like the superhero that he was often Nicknamed after, the African Superman fell on some hard time, time that he unlike other artistes has been open about, that’s right am talking about his drug addiction a period that even saw him living in Mombasa. Now if you are like me, you remember Bamzigi as the first ever Kenyan celebrity that we saw at 6am, at Sexy Saturday at the Carnivore also at the first ever Sunglasses At Night at T-Mall when Mikhail Kuzi introduced Bamzigi and the crowd of EDM fans went wild. As we all know one of the darkest demons behind EDM is the drugs, and of course the beautiful women.
All through his drug struggle the rapper and trendsetter had one thing in mind, THE FUTURE OF MUSIC, he invented 3050 Muzika or Muzika as it was known back then, and many people mocked him but that didn’t stop Bamzigi, after a few months of silence, like a lion in Hibernation and just like the Superhero he is named after Bamzigi rose past the haters and ill-speakers.
Proving that his only Kryptonite is women, he came back to radio with a bang, (after his previous sting at Metro and Kiss FM) and joined Media Stream’s ONE FM 97.1 to host the Throwdown later named “THE NEW AND IMPRVED FIRED UP” with amazing segment like “I make you Famous” he cemented he has cemented his place i history as a radio presenter, performer and artist. In addition he released Bachete, Light It up, I like I like and my personal favorite MUTIMIA MOROGI, which he did alongside his brother Kora and long-time Producer and friend Wawesh.
In conclusion, Harrison Munio aka Bamzigi aka @bamzigizigi (as he is known on twitter) has proven that family and friends like Kevin Provoke, Plan B, Lenana Kariba and Miss. Alexis Kimani, are the real truth behind the success and Resurrection of a true artist, an artist who constantly promotes new talent like Large Gang, Kagwe Mungai, Lyra and OctoPizzo, so to all wanna be artist and superstars learn something from the Amazing Story of an Amazing Artist.
I give him a 9.1 rating on the RAA METER
